Im back and have made some changes

I have been absent for some time from the blog, and Im actually not sorry for it.  I have been needing some time to re-balance and refocus.

For the last few months, we have done quite a bit of traveling, which generally translates to compromising the quality and healthfulness of what Im eating.  I wont go into details, but it seemed after I got off our cruise in August, I kept on cruising in my mind with regard to my eating.  I kept thinking, Oh, I will just start again tomorrow, or on Monday."  This thinking never ever works for me.

Finally, a few weeks ago I buckled down and started my version of Chef AJs Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge.  Earlier this summer, I donated some money to her IndieGoGo campaign to fund finishing her first season of her Foodytv.com show, Healthy Living with Chef AJ.  If you havent checked it out yet, I would highly recommend it!  She has some plant-based rock stars on her show including Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. Campbell.  In new episodes she has recently filmed but are not up yet include Lindsay Nixon from Happy Herbivore and Wendy from Healthy Girls Kitchen.

As part of my donation perk, I got a digital copy of her 21-Day Recipe Guide for Ultimate Weight Loss.  You can find more information about her full program here.  Her full program comes with video and audio downloads as well as the 21-day recipe guide, but I didnt quite have the budget to afford the full thing.

So I went at it alone with a few give and takes here and there.  Here is generally what I did/have been doing:

Morning: water and tea on the way in to work

Breakfast: 1 lb raw, water sauteed, steamed, or roasted non-starchy veggies

Mid-morning snack (if Im feeling hungry, but generally I havent been): fruit or fruit with a bit of raw oats soaked in soy milk

Lunch: baked potato, vegetable or bean soup/chili, apple or other fruit

Afternoon snack (if Im hungry): 1/2-1 lb raw veggies

Dinner: bean and rice or bean and potato dinner with more veggies

The first day I did this, it seemed like a lot of food!  And it was!  In the week or two following, I found that I wasnt hungry for my mid-morning snack, but enjoyed my afternoon veggie snack on my way home and before making dinner.  One of the items I am still needing to work on is not to overeat at dinnertime.  I make these meals at home every night, and tend to overestimate how much I need to plate for myself.

Some items I have limited or removed from my diet include excess salt besides the occasional low sodium soy sauce, all oils, refined carbs, nuts and seeds (which ARE NOT bad, but I have a hard time limiting myself within my caloric needs), baked goods, avocados, olives, most alcohol, and obviously all animal products.

Another aspect that I have been working on are managing my cravings and to limit my exposure to "food porn".  Being a blogger, I like to follow other bloggers to see the beautiful and creative recipes they make, but this really does nothing more than tease my brain and cause me to have an unhealthy relationship with food.  Its hard to admit, AND even harder to stop, but until I get a full handle on my cravings, my weight, and overall health, food blogs are a no-no for me.  Wendy at Healthy Girls Kitchen explains this same thing very well here.

Overall, I have been keeping my meals very simple.  It is when I make more complicated recipes with dozens of ingredients that I get into trouble with overeating.  These past few weeks I have had staples of brown rice and baked sweet potatoes.  One of my lifesavers has been Donnas Cheeze Sauce that I found on Nutmeg Notebooks blog here.  I find that it goes well with just about everything and is potato and carrot-based, so it follows my rules and goals.

Ah... that seemed long-winded, but I wanted to give an update with what I have been doing during my absence.  My next post will be about my results so far, so stay tuned!

Health and Happiness,

Amy

Have Excess Weight We Can Help

Fat loss is a huge topic in fitness today, with such a huge number of people taking the plunge and deciding to lose weight. Shedding extra weight is not always easy. Keep reading for some approaches to ensure youll be successful in your weight loss goals.

To easily lose weight, one should stop eating at fast-food type eateries. These type of food establishments often serve food which has many things that do not go well with weight loss. Fats, salts, and sugars can all be found in fast food, and in sometimes in large quantities. By avoiding these places, one will lose weight and feel healthier.

A great way to help you lose weight is to choose a day, once a week, where you eat whatever you want and dont follow your diet. When youve been dieting for a while you may realize that you hit a plateau. By consuming whatever you want once a week, you actually end up boosting your metabolism.

A tip that is great help you lose weight is to switch out butter and start using fat free alternatives. Butter is one of the most things that are unhealthy can put into your body. There are plenty of fat free alternatives out there that do the job just as good.

Many people genuinely believe that to lose weight, you need to avoid eating all fats. These people are sadly mistaken. In fact, your brain needs these fats so that you can function properly. You should avoid saturated fats from greasy fast food chains, but make sure to eat healthy fats.

Another tip that will help you lose weight is always to eat a high-water fruit such as for example an apple, peach, or grapefruit right before dinner. The fiber, water, and overall bulk of the apple will displace some of the room in your stomach that would otherwise have been available for food.

Dont forget to commit yourself to a outcome that is long-term. Do the kinds of activities and exercises for a long time that you enjoy so that you will continue to do them. Shortcuts and easy fixes will only be in the method of what must be a lifelong commitment to your quality of life.

Be sure that you are getting plenty of sleep if you are trying to lose weight. If you dont get enough sleep, your hunger hormone will increase. It shall also decrease the hormone that makes you feel full. You also should be well rested each so that you will have more energy morning.

If you are trying to shed weight, pasta can be a bad thing. If you really like pasta, there are healthy options available to you. You can replace pasta that is regular with noodles that are created with whole wheat. Using wheat that is whole tends to be much more filling than regular pasta.

Do not keep foods on hand that go against your specific diet. Clean out your fridge and cupboards when you start your diet, and give away anything you are known by you shouldnt eat. Stock up on good-tasting foods that are healthy. You wont end up tempted nearly as much if your forbidden foods arent easy to get at.

If you find yourself overweight or unhappy with your figure, then this was the article for you. Remember, without continued exercise and portion control your weight can come back quickly.

Challenge number 1 who could have known !

So, apparently, my first challenge is to want the disks badly enough to actually get them...

I ordered the disks online... hmmm on Friday, 27th January 2012, and left light-hearted for a weekend in Barcelona - a great weekend, lots of fun and relaxation, read in my other blog. All along I was checking my emails now and then, and well - nothing :(. I only got the automatic confirmation, but never got the follow-up email with log-in details... Then I checked my bank account - nothing there either.

So, now it is day 5, my order has apparently not been processed yet, and after I sent an email to the customer services, I still didnt get a reply. You can blame the time difference, but still - I am getting impatient. (So much to say about the infamous TAM customer service - I heard before it is not the best in the world). If nothing happens by tomorrow morning, I am gonna spend the money to call inter-continental.

Cos to be very honest, I am afraid I wont have enough of excitement, if I dont get the disks and soon. :(

Never knew that my challenge would actually start before the BIG START, before DAY 1 :)))) But I will keep it up.

For now I am sticking with a healthier routine. I eat oatmeal porridge every morning - on water without salt or sugar. I know, some people say it is disgusting, but if you add an apple or mandarin (or any other fruit you really like), it becomes a really enjoyable breakfast - both tasty and healthy. I dont use any sugar in anything, and try not to eat too much sweets. I am also not a very bread person, but - sigh - I love pasta. So I switched to whole grain pasta at least. I use only olive oil for anything in the food (no butter, mayonnaise or any other oil). And I dont fry anything at all. I only eat fresh, boiled, steamed or backed stuff. Even though I still consume a lot of calories, but I am trying to have healthy yummy calories at least.

Hope to solve my little TAM disks problem and get it going with!!!! Fingers crossed.

UPDATE: At 10pm got an email from the customer service (yuhooo!!!), was able to locate my order, which was apparently shipped already today (so from 1 to 6 weeks of waiting for its arrival now.... :() AND got my password for the community. Will start getting acquainted with it and more and more motivated. Keep up the spirit!
